Masonry or factory-built: two different repair lists
A masonry chimney is repaired with mortar, brick, crown work and liners. A factory-built chimney is a listed metal system inside a wood or stucco chase, and the California Residential Code requires it to be installed and terminated according to the manufacturer's instructions, so repairs mean replacing components with parts that fit that listing.
Where a Malibu house has been rebuilt or remodelled, it may have a factory-built system beside older masonry elsewhere on the property. From inside the firebox, visible mortar joints between firebrick point to masonry; smooth panels meeting at straight seams point to a factory-built unit.

Arrester screens, earthquakes and when to stop using the fireplace
The California Residential Code requires any chimney connected to a solid-fuel fireplace to have an approved spark arrester. On a property in a mapped fire hazard severity zone, where brush and dry ground sit near the house, a screen with a torn or thinned patch deserves attention before the next fire. The state zone map is searched by address.
After an earthquake, the Earthquake Country Alliance advises against using a fireplace with a damaged chimney and notes that inadequately braced chimneys are a common problem. Cracks at the roofline, a chimney that has shifted, or brick on the roof are reasons to stop using the fireplace until someone has looked at it.
