Can I still burn wood in my Los Angeles fireplace?

On most days, yes — but not all. The South Coast Air Quality Management District operates a wood-burning curtailment programme across the basin, and on days when it issues a mandatory no-burn advisory, traditional open-hearth wood fires must not be lit. EPA-certified stoves, pellet stoves and gas inserts are generally exempt. The advisory season runs from November through February and is announced day by day, so check the current SCAQMD advisory before lighting a wood fire in winter.

My chimney survived the Northridge earthquake. Does it still need checking?

It is one of the better reasons to have it checked. The 1994 Northridge earthquake damaged clay tile flue liners across the region, and damage of that kind can be repaired at the exterior masonry while the flue behind it is left as it was. Exterior appearance is a poor predictor of internal liner condition after a seismic event, so the condition of the flue is worth establishing by looking rather than inferring from how the outside of the stack presents.
