The damp, sour smell that marine air draws out of soot
Soot and creosote absorb moisture. When humid ocean air settles into a flue, the deposits give off a sour, barbecue-ash smell that is strongest when the house has been shut and the air inside is still. Where a Malibu house sits closed between visits, the smell tends to be noticed on returning to it, not during the burning season.
A cleaning removes the source. Air fresheners and a closed damper only hide it, and a damper plate that has rusted at the edges does not close tightly enough to hide it for long.
Clearing and checking the spark arrester mesh
The California Residential Code requires any chimney connected to a wood-burning fireplace or appliance to carry an approved spark arrester. On a masonry chimney the mesh openings must be small enough to stop a sphere larger than 1/2 inch and open enough to pass one of 3/8 inch.
Both halves of that rule fail in use. Creosote and soot fur the mesh until the openings close and the fire starts to smoke into the room. Salt air works on the wire from the outside until strands thin, break and leave gaps wider than the code allows. The screen is brushed during cleaning, and a screen with broken or rust-thinned wire is noted for replacement rather than cleaned and left in place.

Canyon lots, roof debris and the chimney outlet
On a canyon or hillside property, the roof around the chimney collects leaves and needles, and dry debris near an outlet that throws sparks is the combination the arrester exists to manage. Debris on the roof and branches over the chimney are recorded as part of the visit.
Where a Malibu property sits in the state responsibility area, state law (Public Resources Code 4291) requires removing any part of a tree within 10 feet of the outlet of a chimney. Whether that applies, and whether the property is in a mapped fire hazard severity zone, is looked up by address on the state map rather than assumed from the neighbourhood.
What moves the cost of chimney cleaning in Malibu
The flue itself is rarely the variable that surprises anyone. What changes the estimate is usually on the roof or behind the damper.
