Gas logs sitting in an old wood-burning firebox
A vented gas log set burns in an ordinary masonry firebox and depends on the chimney to carry its gases away. For that reason the log set's instructions commonly call for the damper to be clamped or blocked so it cannot close fully while the logs are in place. A damper that still shuts completely on a fireplace with gas logs is worth raising.
Typical faults are a pilot that keeps going out, a burner that lights unevenly because its ports are clogged, and a gas key valve in the floor or wall that has gone stiff. Soot on the logs or the firebox face usually means the logs have been moved out of position or the flame needs adjusting.
Where marine air from the harbour side reaches the firebox through a damper held open for the logs, the burner pan and the key valve tend to show rust first. Gas-fueled devices are not subject to South Coast AQMD's no-burn alerts, so a working log set can be lit on days a wood fire cannot.
Firebrick, refractory mortar and the back wall
In a masonry firebox, heat attacks the mortar joints before the brick. Open joints, loose bricks and a back wall that has started to bow are the signs. Failed joints are raked out and repointed with refractory mortar made for firebox temperatures; ordinary mortar breaks down quickly there.
Where a firebox burned wood for decades before gas logs went in, damage from the wood years can be hidden under a layer of gas soot. The joints can only be judged properly once the firebox face has been cleaned.

Cracked hearths and loose surround tiles
The hearth extension in front of the firebox protects the floor from embers and heat. A hairline crack across a hearth that is still solid and level can be left alone. A hearth that has dropped, or has gaps opening toward the floor structure underneath, needs repair before the next wood fire.
Tile or stone facing around the opening can loosen with heat. It is reset with a heat-rated adhesive or mortar, and a loose section right at the firebox opening should be fixed before the fireplace is used again.
