Rusted dampers in Santa Monica fireplaces
A throat damper is a steel plate just above the firebox. In coastal air, the plate and its frame rust, the edges warp, and the handle seizes. A damper that does not close lets damp air and odours into the room; one that does not open fully makes the fire smoke.
Some dampers can be freed and adjusted. Others are too rusted and are replaced, or a sealing damper that closes at the chimney outlet is fitted instead.
Gas log sets that will not light
Where a Santa Monica fireplace has been converted to gas logs and the pilot will not stay lit, the thermocouple or thermopile is a common cause; when the burner lights unevenly, blocked ports often are.
Gas work is done by someone qualified for it. If a CO alarm sounds with the fireplace running, turn it off, get everyone out and call 911. USFA recommends CO alarms outside each sleeping area and on every level.

Before planning a replacement, know that South Coast AQMD Rule 445 restricts what can be installed: a permanently installed device sold or installed must be an EPA-certified wood heater, a pellet heater, a masonry heater or a dedicated gas fireplace.
New development, meaning construction begun on or after March 9, 2009, may not have a permanently installed wood-burning device at all. That is why an owner facing a failed wood fireplace often ends up choosing between a major firebox repair and a gas unit, and it is worth knowing before either is priced.
