Why autumn is the right time in Santa Monica
South Coast AQMD's wood-burning curtailment season runs from November through the end of February, and no-burn alerts can fall on the cold evenings when people want a fire. Sweeping in autumn means the fireplace is ready for the days it can be used.
Autumn also comes after the summer months when birds and animals may have used an uncapped flue. A sweep before the first fire clears anything that moved in.
Getting the house and roof ready for a sweep
A few things make the visit simpler.
- 1Do not light a fire for a day beforehand, so the firebox is cold.
- 2Clear the hearth and move furniture back from the fireplace.
- 3In a multi-unit building, arrange roof access with the HOA or building manager in advance.
- 4Mention a clay tile roof, a locked roof hatch or a gate code when you get in touch.
- 5Note any smells, smoke or sounds you have noticed since the last fire.

What a Santa Monica sweep often finds at the chimney outlet
Near the ocean, the metal at the outlet takes the weather. Cap mesh can be both clogged with soot and thinned by rust, and a damper plate may have rusted enough to stop sealing.
A sweep brushes the screen, and a screen with broken strands is noted for replacement. For wood-burning fireplaces, the California Residential Code requires an approved spark arrester, so a failed screen is more than cosmetic.
When a clean flue still smokes: taller neighbours on close lots
Where Santa Monica lots are closely built, a neighbour's second storey or a new addition can end up standing right beside an older, shorter chimney. The California Residential Code sets the height rule: a chimney must extend at least 3 feet above where it passes through the roof and at least 2 feet higher than any part of a building within 10 feet.
A chimney that no longer meets that rule can lose draft when wind rolls over the taller wall and pushes down the flue. A sweep will record the problem, but brushing does not fix it; extending the chimney or changing the cap is a separate conversation.
