On a direct-vent unit the glass is part of the venting system, not decoration. The gasket around it keeps combustion gases in the firebox and out of the room. A cracked panel or a gasket that has flattened or come loose is repaired with the maker's part for that model, and the unit is not run until it is.

A white or grey film on the inside of the glass is normal residue and can be cleaned with a product meant for fireplace glass. Heavy black soot is different: it points to a burner or air-mixture problem that needs attention before the glass is cleaned.

In an older wood-burning fireplace close to the water, the cast-iron damper is the part most likely to fail. Moist air comes down the flue, the plate rusts to its frame, and it ends up stuck open, which lets house heat out all year, or stuck shut, which fills the room with smoke at the first fire.

Short of those, it is worth checking the simple things before booking a repair: the wall switch, the remote's batteries, the receiver's batteries, and whether the gas shutoff valve near the fireplace is fully open.

For a gas unit, the maker and model decide what parts exist and how easily they can be had; a discontinued model can make a simple repair hard. For a masonry fireplace, the variables are the damper type, how badly the frame has rusted, and the condition of the firebox.

Access to the chimney top matters when a top-mounted damper is the fix, since roof height and pitch set the setup.
