Dampers on an exposed ridge
A throat damper that no longer seals lets wind pull warm air out of the house or push cold air and smell down into the room. On an exposed site that draft can run for much of the year.
A top-sealing damper, fitted at the top of the flue and operated by a cable, seals with a gasket and keeps wind, rain and animals out when the fireplace is not in use. Its body and cable should be stainless to stand up to the salt air. Where the original damper is intact, repairing its handle, pivot or plate may be enough.
Glass doors and what they fix
Glass doors reduce heat loss and drafts when the fireplace is idle, and help with smoke on gusty days. Frames near the coast corrode, hinges stiffen, and glass cracks from heat or impact. Repairs use heat-rated glass and parts sized to the door; if the frame is rusted through, a new door fitted to the opening is often the better choice.
Whether the doors stay open or closed during a wood fire is set by the door maker's instructions, and those are worth finding before the first fire of the season.

Gas log sets in old wood fireboxes
Where a wood fireplace has been fitted with gas logs, the typical faults are a pilot that will not stay lit, a burner with clogged ports, and a valve that sticks. On a windy site the pilot can also be blown out by drafts down the flue.
Smelling gas at the hearth is not a repair question. Everyone goes outside and the gas utility is called from there. USFA recommends a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area.
