Why the glass beads and stones matter
Linear units often burn over a bed of glass beads, stones or ceramic pieces. The manufacturer specifies how much media goes where, and piling it over the burner ports or the pilot changes the flame, causes soot on the glass, or stops the unit lighting.
After cleaning or redecorating, media is often put back differently. Checking the layout against the manual is a free first step before calling for repair.
Hot glass, sealed glass and safety screens
The glass on a sealed gas fireplace is part of the appliance and has to be replaced with the maker's own panel and gasket. Many newer units also have a mesh safety screen in front of the glass to keep hands off a hot surface; if the screen is missing or damaged, replacing it with the listed part is worth doing where there are children.

Older wood-burning fireplaces
Where an older Manhattan Beach house still has a masonry fireplace, the common repairs are firebox joints repointed with refractory mortar, cracked firebrick replaced, and a rusted damper freed or replaced. Checks worth doing before booking a repair
Several no-light faults on modern units are simple. None of these checks involves opening the appliance.
- 1Replace the batteries in the remote and in the receiver, which is often behind the lower access panel.
- 2Confirm the wall switch and the circuit breaker feeding the unit are on.
- 3Make sure the gas shutoff valve near the fireplace is fully open.
- 4Look at the outside vent for anything blocking it, such as plants or a cover.

Parts drive most of the cost on modern units: control boards, power vent motors and custom glass are specific to the manufacturer, and a discontinued model can make a part hard to find. For masonry fireplaces, the extent of firebox work and the damper type are the variables. None of this applies if there is a smell of gas; in that case the house is evacuated and the gas utility called from outside.
