Noisy or dead blowers on heat-circulating units
Some prefab fireplaces circulate heat: room air is drawn in below the firebox, warmed around it and pushed back out through louvers above. A blower that squeals, rattles or stops has usually collected dust and pet hair, has a worn bearing, or has lost power at its switch or thermostat.
Cleaning the blower and its air path comes first; a replacement is matched to the fireplace model. Whether the unit may run with a failed blower is set by the manufacturer's instructions.
Louvers blocked by furniture or a stored screen stop the air path working, blower or not.
Grates, doors and the parts that take the fire
The grate raises the fire and keeps logs off the panels. A sagging or burned-through grate lets logs rest against the back panel, and that is one way panels crack.
Glass doors on a factory-built wood unit must be approved for that model. Doors that stick, cracked glass and hardened gaskets are repair items; doors borrowed from another make are not a fix.

Gas starter valves and log sets
Where a wood-burning prefab has a gas starter pipe or a log set, the valve and its key are on the repair list. A valve that is stiff or will not shut off fully is replaced rather than forced.
If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. Do not try the valve again first.
A log set added to a factory-built wood unit must be one the fireplace maker allows, with the damper secured open while it runs.
When repair stops making sense on an older prefab
Factory-built units are tested to UL 127 as a complete assembly. When the firebox casing is rusted through or warped, or panels and blowers for the model can no longer be found, repairing around the problem keeps in use an assembly that no longer matches the one that was tested.
The useful comparison then is between a like-for-like replacement and a different fuel, such as a direct-vent gas unit. The City of Santa Clarita's building department decides what approvals a replacement needs.
Parts, access and the other price factors
On a prefab unit, the part usually sets the price more than the labor does.
