Offsets hidden inside the chase
A metal chimney does not always run straight. Where the fireplace sits to one side of the chase, or roof framing was in the way, the flue may include offset elbows, and deposits settle on the upper face of each bend.
Flexible rods pass through offsets; stiff ones do not. A useful clue before the visit is whether the chimney outlet sits directly above the fireplace or off to one side.
Log lighter pipes and the ash that blocks them
Some wood-burning fireplaces have a log lighter: a perforated gas pipe along the base of the firebox, with a key valve on the wall or hearth nearby. Ash and fine grit clog its holes, and a partly blocked pipe lights unevenly or not at all.
The pipe is cleared as part of the firebox clean, and the valve is checked to make sure it shuts off fully. A log lighter is meant for starting the fire and should be turned off once the wood has caught.
A gas smell around the valve is not a cleaning matter: get out of the house, then phone the gas utility once you are outside.

Cold winter evenings and short fires
Inland valleys have hot summers and cooler winter nights, and an evening fire starts in a cold flue. Smoke condenses most before the flue warms up, so a string of short fires that never heat the chimney leaves more creosote than fewer, longer and hotter ones.
Metal flues warm faster than masonry, which helps, but a small fire of damp wood still coats them. Dry, split wood and a fire allowed to burn briskly for its first stretch keep deposits down.
